Moscow is a center of world culture and art, and a cultural center of Russia.

Moscow offers a large-scale cultural and entertainment program.

Moscow is ahead of the most world's cities, with over 450 museums located in the city, including five largest museum associations: the Manezh, the Museum of Moscow, the Pushkin Museum, Kolomenskoye and the Museum of Modern Art. View chart

Due to the efforts of the city authorities (that, for example, increase the museums working hours), the museum attendance has increased more than 1.5 times since 2010. In 2016, the number of visitors was 19 million people.

Moscow is a city of theaters. There are 250 theaters and concert facilities with a wide repertoire ranging from classical to modern pieces. In 2016, the city theaters held more than 23 thousand performances, including 280 premieres. View chart

Every year, Moscow theaters are visited by almost 7.5 million people. In terms of theater attendance, Moscow is comparable to Shanghai, and behind such cities as London or New York.

Moscow is a reading city. There are 1676 libraries in Moscow (including 442 city libraries). The annual amount of books lent out from the library fund exceeds 61 million copies, i. e. 5 books per one Moscow resident a year on average. According to this indicator, Moscow is ahead of Paris, London and Hong Kong. View chart

Moscow has more than 140 cinema theaters. According to the number of cinema halls per 1 million people, Moscow is comparable to New York or Istanbul and has a development potential in terms of the cinema halls availability for the residents. On average, Moscow has 48 cinema halls per 1 million residents, against more than 102 in London, and 88 in Paris. View chart

Many business, cultural, sports and other events with growing popularity among Moscow residents and guests are held in Moscow. In 2016, more than 50 million people took part in the Moscow Seasons festival. The Round the World festival ("Krug Sveta") in 2015 was attended by 7 million people and, thus, included in the Guinness Book of Records. According to the World Cities Culture Report, Moscow holds the largest number of festivals and holidays.
